Breastrokes with Cancer Research !!

The Outdoor Swimming Society proudly presents 'Breastrokes' with USA PRO

Location : Windermere, Lake District, Cumbria

The Outdoor Swimming Society believe if you've never experienced the freedom of wild swimming before, there's no better place to start! In a now annual event held in early September you can join swimmers in England's largest lake to swim either 1.5km or 3km, with a BBQ, bonfire, beer and camping afterwards for those that would like stay.

The swim starts in the afternoon from YMCA Lakeside on the southern shore of Windermere, and is open to men, women and children over 12 accompanied by an adult.

The swim is beautiful and doable for anyone who likes swimming and is happy to train. Swimmers set off in small groups, with kayaks and safety boats along the course for safety and encouragement, so whether you're a slow & scenic swimmer or a triathlete you can find your own water.

Swimmers doing the 3km swim around Silver Holme island, where they can dock in for a hot drinks before making the swim back.

Wetsuits are optional, but recommended to anyone without extensive outdoor swimming acclimatisation.

Not only will you have a brilliant experience - you will also be raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The Outdoor Swimming Society says that it's time British swimmers had more fun. In the early 1900s there were river swimming clubs and lido's all over the country, but outdoor swimming died out as indoor pools came in.

We believe it's time to get back to the joy of swimming under an open sky. Water needs no roof!

Our manifesto:

  • We believe swimmers have too long been held in chlorined captivity! Everyone with a set of bathers should be set free to immerse themselves in nature
  • We support all those keeping lidos open and lakes and rivers clean
  • We promise to enlarge and celebrate the beauty of every day we can by going for a nice outdoor swim
  • We pledge to take our friends with us so they can join
  • We embrace the rejuvenating effects of cold water and undertake to strip and dip wherever we can
